Our Values
The most important thing about what we do is that we truly Love It. Nothing brings more joy and satisfaction than seeing your animals born, nurtured each day and treated as part of our family. From our first Highland Cow “Skye” to our first pig “Oreo”, they are truly as much a part of us, as the piglets and calves they continue to contribute to our farm. We are a small family farm rooted in a love of nature and the animals we raise. Much of what we do would likely seem outdated by today’s modern standards: saving all of our lawn clippings and packing by hand into barrels for winter feed or collecting our rainwater to provide the cleanest water. It isn’t about automation to us, it is about doing what’s right. We invite you to get to know some of our livestock as they are the ones that make us successful and provide all of us with products that will allow us to be healthy and know we are actually part of something special.
“Through our research, what we’ve discovered is that, contrary to the popular narrative, red meat is one the most nutrient-dense foods available. Perhaps more controversially, when raised properly, cattle and other grazers may be one of our most promising tools toward mitigating climate change.” -Diane Rodgers, Sacred Cow: The Case for (Better) Meat: Why Well-Raised Meat Is Good for You and Good for the Planet.
Meet Your Farmers
We are Russ & Amanda Kurtz, and we are the proud owners of The Fancy Farm Wife Mercantile in Raymond, OH. Though the dream of having our own farm was years in the making, it wasn’t until we got married here at the farm that our dream really began to take shape. Our first Highland Cow “Skye” joined us in 2019, and now a dozen cattle later we continue to name them and ensure they are at the center of what we do. A few years ago, we added pork and now have over 40 piglets born yearly all thanks to our first pig “Oreo” and her oldest daughter “Esther”. No farm is complete without Chickens and our flock of Rhode Island Reds ensures plenty of fresh eggs are available.
